Why is Elphaba green in the book?

The elixir is first introduced when the Wizard has Elphaba's mother drink it in No One Mourns The Wicked. Some people believe that the green elixir is what makes Elphaba's skin green. After her mother dies giving birth to Nessarose, Elphaba keeps it as a reminder.
