Why is calcium likely to lose two electrons?

When atoms lose or gain electrons, they become what are called ions. Atoms that can lose two electrons, such as Calcium, can form molecules with two chemical bonds: In transition metal atoms and in many heavier elements, the octet rule does not apply.

Similarly, how many electrons can an element have?

In an atom, the electrons spin around the center, also called the nucleus. The electrons like to be in separate shells/orbitals. Shell number one can only hold 2 electrons, shell two can hold 8, and for the first eighteen elements shell three can hold a maximum of eight electrons.
