Why do Endotherms have a higher metabolic rate?
Endotherms and ectotherms. Endotherms generate most of the heat they need internally. When it's cold out, they increase metabolic heat production to keep their body temperature constant. Because of this, the internal body temperature of an endotherm is more or less independent of the temperature of the environment.
Endotherms are animals that primarily produces its own heat. Ectotherms are animals that primarily gains heat through the environment. Homeotherms are animals that have a constant body temperature. Poikilotherms are animals whose body temperature adjusts depending on the environment.

Animal Body Types - Further Reading. The two extremes in the animal kingdom are endothermic homeotherms and ectothermic poikilotherms. Most mammals, including humans, as well as most birds are endothermic homeotherms, while most fish, invertibrates, reptiles, and amphibians are ectothermic poikilotherms.
- Homeothermy or homothermy is thermoregulation that maintains a stable internal body temperature regardless of external influence. Homeotherms are not necessarily endothermic.
- Cold-blooded animals, like reptiles, amphibians, and fish, become hotter and colder, depending on the the temperature outside. For example, when the sun sets at night, their bodies are cooler because it is less warm outside. When the sun is out, however, their bodies soak up the heat and become warmer.
- All reptiles are ectotherms, or ectothermic. Mammals, on the other hand, can regulate their body heat from within. That's why it can be 98°F inside your mouth even when the air temperature around you is 50°F. Mammals are endotherms, or endothermic.
Endotherm. Endotherm, so-called warm-blooded animals; that is, those that maintain a constant body temperature independent of the environment. The endotherms primarily include the birds and mammals; however, some fish are also endothermic.
- Both amphibians and reptiles are ectotherms, meaning that they derive heat from the environment, rather than producing it internally. To say that they are cold-blooded is imprecise since they, like endothermic vertebrates, need to keep warm in order to remain active.
- Paired lungs are the respiratory organs of mammals. All mammals, even the ones living in the water, breathe air oxygen. The frequency of breathing differs: larger mammals breathe less than smaller animals.
- The skin of reptiles is dry and scaly, so they can live in arid locations (although many do not). However, they cannot use their skin as an organ of gas exchange. Reptiles depend entirely on their lungs for this. Their lungs are considerably more efficient than those of amphibians.
