In his latest film, Denzel Washington takes on the Russian mafia in a reboot of 1980s TV series The Equalizer. In The Equalizer, Washington's character Robert McCall is a former intelligence officer who uses his astonishing powers of observation to identify sharp everyday objects with which to despatch his enemies.
An equalizer is the circuit or equipment used to achieve equalization. Since equalizers, "adjust the amplitude of audio signals at particular frequencies," they are, "in other words, frequency-specific volume knobs."
A graphic equalizer, more commonly known as an EQ is used to change the frequency response, or in other words the tone, of a sound, song, or instrument. It can be used to give more bass, less bass, more treble, etc. Learning to use a graphic equalizer is not too difficult, but it takes a bit of practice to get used to.
EQ Frequency breakdown (2/2)
|3-7kHz||This is the area where vocal sibilance resides. Boost slightly to add sense of "volume" It also adds a harshness that is particularly fatiguing. Add warmth without loss of clarity by attenuating this region a bit|
|4kHz||Boost vocal here for presence|
|Frequency Range||Frequency Values|
|Sub-bass||20 to 60 Hz|
|Bass||60 to 250 Hz|
|Low midrange||250 to 500 Hz|
|Midrange||500 Hz to 2 kHz|
Frequency response is the range of bass, mids and treble. In the example 20 to 20,000 Hz, the first number represents the bass end of the spectrum while the second number represents the treble end. 20 to 20,000 Hz is generally accepted as the audible frequency range, this is the standard for most headphones.
They have frequencies from 2.048 kHz-16.384 kHz (C7–C10). Treble sound is the counterpart to bass sound. The term "treble" derives from the Latin triplum, used in 13th century motets to indicate the third and highest range.
A bass sound or instrument is the deepest. The word bass has two main meanings with separate pronunciations — bass with a high vowel sound (like base) ironically refers to very low sounds — bass instruments and singers are in the lowest part of the musical range, like the low rumble of a bass guitar.
The residual noise after a kick drum hit can cover a band of frequencies from below 20 Hz to about 100 Hz. I think of the kick's sound as having two parts: an initial attack which covers a broad band of frequencies from 100 Hz. to 15 KHz. followed by a (pitchless) decay in the 20 Hz to 100 Hz range.
The open low E on a bass is about 41hz, and a low B string sounds around 30hz, so we may give cabs that start at 60hz a dirty look. However, when a mic or speaker shows frequency response specifications, it does not mean that the the device does not pick up or reproduce frequencies beyond the frequency spectrum quoted.
Bass players hate hearing people ask them if playing bass is easy. The truth is, to play any musical instrument well takes years of hard work and study. In my teaching experience, I think starting off on bass is easier for students than getting started on guitar. But, the bass carries a lot of responsibility in a band.
Why Bass Players Are Important in a Band. Typically when teenagers and young adults decide to form a band, the lead collaborators play guitar, and one may sing. Bass players are important in not only the chemistry of the band, but are integral to creating a solid overall sound.
The electric guitar is a six-stringed instrument, and standard tuning is: E-A-D-G-B-E. Therefore, the strings of the bass guitar are tuned E-A-D-G, just like the lowest four strings on a regular guitar. In many ways, the bass is exactly the same as the guitar, except with two fewer strings and lower tuning.
The simplest difference between guitar and bass guitar is the pitch range of the instruments. Bass guitar plays notes an octave lower than a regular guitar. Think of the song 'Another One Bites the Dust' by Queen. In fact, that is the sound of the lowest note on the most common type of bass guitar.
Set your price range. A new bass guitar can cost anywhere from $200 to $5000 depending on the brand, quality, and finish. Used basses tend to range from $100 to $1500 and are often just as good, although pricing and selection will vary from one locale to another.

A bass guitar by itself doesn't make any sound. You need to get a bass amp to fill the room (or stage) with some good vibrations. Amp power is measured in Watts. If you are just looking to practice at home and build up your skills for a while, you can make do with a small and inexpensive amp, around 100 Watts.
Some guitar amplifiers have a high-pass filter that removes the lower frequencies, so your bass may sound quite thin, but you can certainly play a bass through any properly designed musical instrument amplifier with no problem. (Although there is a modern bass amp that uses 5 inch speakers very successfully.)
