What wave moves back and forth?
Longitudinal Waves. In a longitudinal wave the particle displacement is parallel to the direction of wave propagation. The particles do not move down the tube with the wave; they simply oscillate back and forth about their individual equilibrium positions.
A mechanical wave is a disturbance in matter that transfers energy through the matter. The matter through which a mechanical wave travels is called the medium (plural, media). There are three types of mechanical waves: transverse, longitudinal, and surface waves.
