What type of volcano has slow moving lava?
Lava Flows. The major eruptive product of Hawaiian volcanoes is lava. Lava flows can form during fountaining eruptions or they can well out of the ground with little or no pyroclastic activity. There are two major types of basaltic lava flow, ' a'a and pahoehoe .
These often occur where plate movement has caused large fractures in the earth's crust, and may also spring up around the base of a volcano with a central vent. Fissure eruptions are characterized by a curtain of fire, a curtain of lava spewing out to a small height above the ground.
- A volcanic vent is that spot in the Earth's crust where gases, molten rock, lava and rocks erupt. Volcanic vents can be at the top of some of the largest volcanoes on Earth, like Hawaii's Mauna Kea, or they can be openings in the Earth's crust down at the bottom of the ocean.
- The most abundant gas is water vapor (H2O), followed by carbon dioxide (CO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). Secondary gases are also commonly emitted from volcanoes and include hydrogen sulfide (H2S), hydrogen (H), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen chloride (HCl), hydrogen fluoride (HF), and helium (He).
- Magma forms from partial melting of mantle rocks. They may collect in a magma chamber or they may just come straight up. As they rise, gas molecules in the magma come out of solution and form bubbles and as the bubbles rise they expand.
Because mafic lava is low viscosity, when it erupts from a volcano it flows downslope away from the vent, gradually cooling and crystallizing. Because of the relative ease of flow, basaltic volcanoes are broad, with gentle slopes. They don't have the stereotypical steep volcanic cone shape.
