What type of material is silicon?
It's usually found linked up with a pair of oxygen molecules as silicon dioxide, otherwise known as silica. Quartz, an abundant ingredient in sand, is made up of non-crystallized silica. Silicon is neither metal nor non-metal; it's a metalloid, an element that falls somewhere between the two.
Silicon (Si), a nonmetallic chemical element in the carbon family (Group 14 [IVa] of the periodic table). Silicon makes up 27.7 percent of Earth's crust; it is the second most abundant element in the crust, being surpassed only by oxygen.
- In short, silicon is a naturally occurring chemical element, whereas silicone is a synthetic substance. Silicon is the 14th element on the periodic table. It's a metalloid, meaning it has properties of both metals and nonmetals, and is the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust, after oxygen.
- Silicon is a semiconductor I.e. it can conduct electricity as well as behave as an insulator by varying it's properties. Silicon is currently the most used material in space semiconductor devices. The conductivity of silicon lies between the conductivity limits of conductors and insulators.
- Silicon is a chemical element with symbol Si and atomic number 14. It is a hard and brittle crystalline solid with a blue-grey metallic lustre; and it is a tetravalent metalloid and semiconductor. It is a member of group 14 in the periodic table: carbon is above it; and germanium, tin, and lead are below it.
This element is a solid. Silicon is classified as a "Metalloid" element and is located in Groups 13, 14,15, 16 and 17 of the Periodic Table. An element classified as one of the Metalloids has the properties of both metals and Non-Metals.

Silicon dioxide (SiO2), silicon's most common compound, is the most abundant compound in the earth's crust, and comprises roughly 14% of the earth's crust. SiO2 is mined both as sand and as vein or lode deposits, for use in industry.

Silicon is very important in silicon alloys. An alloy is simply a mixture of a metal and at least one other element, created to add strength or improve processing of the metal. Steel is a common example of an alloy, where iron and carbon have been combined.
- Phosphorus is found in Group 15 (VA) of the periodic table. The periodic table is a chart that that shows how chemical elements are related to each other. Phosphorus is part of the nitrogen family along with nitrogen, arsenic, antimony, and bismuth.
- Silicon dioxide is also added to many foods and supplements. As a food additive, it serves as an anticaking agent to avoid clumping. In supplements, it's used to prevent the various powdered ingredients from sticking together.
- Pure distilled water is two parts hydrogen mixed with one part oxygen. The parts in this case are atoms. Water (H2O) is considered a pure substance. A mixture is therefore a glass of water with other things dissolved inside, like a flavored powder, tea, coffee, or medicine.
