What type of elements make up most of the periodic table?
Using the periodic table, you can classify the elements in many ways. One useful way is by metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. (See also The Periodic Table: Families and Periods.) Most of the elements on the periodic table are classified as metals.
What are the three classes of elements in the periodic table?
Elements in different groups are lumped together in one of three classes, depending on their properties. The classes are metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.

The following names for specific groups in the periodic table are in common use:
- Group 1: alkali metals.
- Group 2: alkaline earth metals.
- Group 11: coinage metals (not an IUPAC approved name)
- Group 15: pnictogens (not an IUPAC approved name)
- Group 16: chalcogens.
- Group 17: halogens.
- Group 18: noble gases.

Elements in the same group in the periodic table have similar chemical properties. This is because their atoms have the same number of electrons in the highest occupied energy level. Group 1 elements are reactive metals called the alkali metals. Group 0 elements are unreactive non-metals called the noble gases.
Nonmetals: The term "nonmetals" is used to classify hydrogen (H), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), oxygen (O), sulfur (S) and selenium (Se). Halogens: The halogen elements are a subset of the nonmetals. They comprise Group 17 of the periodic table, from fluorine (F) through astatine (At).
The system of five elements are found in Vedas, especially Ayurveda, the pancha mahabhuta, or "five great elements", of Hinduism are bhūmi (earth), ap or jala (water), tejas or agni (fire), marut, vayu or pavan (air or wind) and vyom or shunya (space or zero) or akash (aether or void).
Seventeen elements are generally classified as nonmetals; most are gases (hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, neon, chlorine, argon, krypton, xenon and radon); one is a liquid (bromine), and a few are solids (carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, selenium, and iodine).
The Periodic Table: Families and Periods. In the periodic table of elements, there are seven horizontal rows of elements called periods. The vertical columns of elements are called groups, or families. (See also The Periodic Table: Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids.)
About 91 of the 118 elements in the periodic table are metals; the others are nonmetals or metalloids. Some elements appear in both metallic and non-metallic forms.
The four elements of western culture are: EARTH, AIR, FIRE, and WATER. These four elements were believed to be essential to life. Taoism has five elements, each one superior to the next in turn: wood, earth, water, fire, and metal. Metal conquers wood, wood conquers earth, et cetera.
In chemistry, a group (also known as a family) is a column of elements in the periodic table of the chemical elements. There are 18 numbered groups in the periodic table, and the f-block columns (between groups 3 and 4) are not numbered.
These different versions of hydrogen are called isotopes. All isotopes of a particular element have the same number of protons, but have a different number of neutrons. If you change the number of neutrons an atom has, you make an isotope of that element. Currently, scientists know of 118 different elements.
Caesium and fluorine. Group I metals are the most reactive metals as they only have one electron in their outer shell which is easy to lose; they get more reactive as you go down the periodic table as the electron is further from the nucleus and shielded by the inner electrons.
A table in which the chemical elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number. Elements with similar properties are arranged in the same column (called a group), and elements with the same number of electron shells are arranged in the same row (called a period).
As of 2016, the periodic table has 118 confirmed elements, from element 1 (hydrogen) to 118 (oganesson). Elements 113, 115, 117 and 118, the most recent discoveries, were officially confirmed by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) in December 2015.
The only difference between a molecule of a compound and a molecule of an element is that in a molecule of an element, all the atoms are the same. For example, in a molecule of water (a compound), there is one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms. Ethane is a molecule with 2 carbon atoms and 6 hydrogen atoms.
Ayurveda 101: The Five Elements of Nature. When we look to the beauty of nature, we find that five elements provide the foundation for the entire physical world. Ayurveda recognizes these elements–Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth—as the building blocks of all material existence.
As with any grid, the periodic table has rows running left to right, and columns running up and down. The rows are called PERIODS and the columns are called GROUPS. Hydrogen (H) is the first element in the periodic table because it has just one proton in its nucleus.
