Gauge sizes are usually a number followed by g or the word gauge. Gauge sizes work in reverse, meaning that higher numbers (like 16 gauge) are thinner than smaller numbers (like a 6 gauge). The word gauging refers to increasing the size of a piercing hole to accommodate larger jewelry. You are stretching the piercing.

Ears might not always go back to their original size. Some ears, when stretched too far, will not shrink down to a normal earring (usually 20g or 18g) size.It is universally accepted that 2g is the point of no return.
A number of factors can affect the cost of ear surgery, notably the extent of the procedure, where it is performed and the surgeon performing the treatment. In general, the cost of earlobe surgery ranges from about $400 to $900, although it can be higher for more extensive tears.
Fortunately 00 gauge is certainly big, but not huge when compared with other ear projects. You're looking at perhaps 3 to 4 months, or a few months more, depending on how fast of a healer you are. A very slow healer, like someone who is chronically ill, (like me), could take closer to a year.
What is a blowout, huh? A blowout is when your ear is not ready to stretch up a size, and you are forcing a taper (or plug) into your ear and the part of your lobe that is stretched gets a bad reaction and skin pushes through to the very back.
Because of the fact that everyone's body reacts differently, this answer varies. It is recommended that you wait at least 6 weeks in between stretches. This will give your earlobes time to heal up and become a little loose. However, we recommend that you wait 2-6 months between each stretch.
The starting point for most people is 14g, which is just slightly larger than a regular earring. If you've only recently healed from a regular ear piercing, you may want to start out with 16g tapers just to be on the safe side. Most standard piercings start at 16g or 14g, but can be done bigger by request.
Ear Plug Material Choices
- Steel: Steel is a smooth, non-porous, easy to clean material considered by most to be an excellent choice for fresh ear stretches.
- Titanium: Titanium is another choice that is widely considered to be one of the best for ear stretching and for fresh stretches.
As a general rule of thumb, you should wait a minimum of 3-4 months before stretching a fresh soft tissue piercing, and healed ear lobe piercings can often be stretched at the rate of one size (about 1mm to 1.5mm or 1/16") each 30 to 45 days, minimum.
Acrylic really isn't a good material to use for stretching, or for wearing in general for that matter. The problem with acrylic is that it can't properly be sterilized, breaks down over time & cracks, & is often toxic, & the heat from your body can cause it to break down & leach those toxins into your skin.
They will get the job done, but acrylic can never be sterilized and it is a bit harder to get through than steel is. If you are on a budget then acrylic is ok, but its highly recommended to use steel tapers for stretching.
Typically avoid glass or stone tunnels and stick with either a single flare or no flare plugs. However, different types of stone are more porous than others, so if using stone for ear stretching, non-porous stones such as quartz, obsidian, or opalite would be desirable.
A common misconception about ear weights is that they're made for stretching your ears. If you're looking to stretch your ears you're better off using plugs or tunnels. The way ear weights work in terms of stretching, is that they will only stretch the skin on the very bottom of your ear lobe.
Stretching, in the context of body piercing, is the deliberate expansion of a healed piercing for the purpose of wearing certain types of jewelry. Ear piercings are the most commonly stretched piercings, with nasal septum piercings, tongue piercings and lip piercings/lip plates following close behind.
People with gauges who choose to undergo earlobe repair surgery are looking to reverse course and restore their ears to their original shape. However, as a result of having stretched their earlobes so dramatically, the skin cannot retract to its former shape without help from a surgeon.
These should only be done on earlobes with no open wounds or irritation. The purpose of oil massages is to break down any scar tissue that's been created by the piercing or built up during the stretching process. Some good oils to use are emu oil, vitamin E oil, jojoba oil, Naked oil, and bio oil.
For maintenance ear cleaning, simply add a drop or two of jojoba to each ear a few minutes before showing. This will help soften and remove wax buildup as well as conditioning the ear in case of dryness (just like it does with skin). Then put a cotton ball in the ear and repeat on other side.
