Population and Purpose: Where we use electricity. Electricity is used for many purposes – for example, illuminating a space, cooking food, cooling a store, or running a production line. In Wyoming, more than half of the electricity sold in the state is used for industrial applications.

How do we use electricity in the home?

By separating electricity use into different end uses we can see where the major demand for electricity is in US homes. Air conditioning is a big user, so are lighting, water heating and refrigeration.

Why do we have to have electricity?

Atoms are made up of even smaller particles called protons, neutrons and electrons. An outside force called voltage can push electrons from atom to atom. This movement of electrons produces electricity. Electricity is created by electrons that have become loose from their atoms – wow!
