What is the meaning of Totipotency?
totipotency. The ability of cells such as an embryonic stem cell to differentiate into any type of body cell. Plant cells are also totipotent, which helps to explain why a graft of a plant can generate a whole new individual out of just a small branch cutting.
Definition. adjective. Having the ability to differentiate into all cell types. Supplement. For example, the zygote and early embryonic cells are totipotent since they can differentiate into any cell type during development.
- Cellular differentiation is the process by which a less specialized cell becomes a more specialized cell type. Differentiation occurs many times during the development of a multicellular organism. The organism changes from a single zygote to a complex system of tissues and cell types.
- Human pluripotent stem cell: One of the "cells that are self-replicating, are derived from human embryos or human fetal tissue, and are known to develop into cells and tissues of the three primary germ layers.
- pluripotentiality. The ability of stem cells to differentiate into almost all cells that arise from the three germ layers but not to form placenta or supporting structures. See also UNIPOTENTIALITY.
Cell Totipotency. A plant grows by increasing its cell population while the cells specialize their functions. Increasing cell population is done by cell division (also called mitosis). Before a mother cell divides into two daughter cells, it makes an exact copy of its genome first.

- Neurulation refers to the folding process in vertebrate embryos, which includes the transformation of the neural plate into the neural tube. The embryo at this stage is termed the neurula.
- Pregnancy Facts. Organogenesis is the period of time that the fetus's important organs are developing. This begins at 6 weeks and extends to 10 weeks. It is during this period that the fetus is most at risk from birth defects caused by external factors (such as drugs and other toxins).

- Embryonic cells within the first couple of cell divisions after fertilization are the only cells that are totipotent. Pluripotent cells can give rise to all of the cell types that make up the body; embryonic stem cells are considered pluripotent.
- A unipotent stem cell refers to a cell that can differentiate along only one lineage. The word 'uni' itself is derived from the Latin word 'unus,' meaning one. Found in adult tissues, a unipotent stem cell, in comparison with other types of stem cells, has the lowest differentiation potential.
- Definition. adjective. Having the ability to differentiate to a limited number of cell fates or into closely related family of cells. Supplement. Multipotent progenitor cells can give rise to many but limited types of cell.
