What is the meaning of Ajax calls?

An Ajax call is an asynchronous request initiated by the browser that does not directly result in a page transition. A servlet request is a Java-specifc term (servlets are a Java specification) for servicing an HTTP request that could get a simple GET or POST (etc) or an Ajax request.

Keeping this in view, what is AJAX and what is the purpose of using it?

Ajax is a client-side script that communicates to and from a server/database without the need for a postback or a complete page refresh. The best definition I've read for Ajax is “the method of exchanging data with a server, and updating parts of a web page – without reloading the entire page.”

What is Ajax and JSON?

JSON, short for JavaScript Object Notation is a lightweight data interchange format. Its main application is in AJAX web application programming, where it serves as an alternative to the use of the XML format for data exchange between client and server.
