Direct sunlight is when you (or the plant) gets the rays directly on it. It is like sitting outside, without a hat, and nothing is between you and the sun. Indirect sunlight is light that must reach you under your hat, your parasol, inside a room etcetera.

The tilt of the Earth affects the length of days and also the amount of direct sunlight received during the seasons.
