What is the difference between a primer and an undercoat?
Primer and Undercoat. If it is a new surface, use a primer. If your painting an existing surface that has been painted before, use an undercoater. For even the most experienced professional, using the words “primer” and “undercoat” interchangeably can paint a picture of confusion.
Can you use alkyd paint over latex primer?
It can be used to provide a durable finish on unfinished wood. You can apply alkyd paint over an existing layer of latex paint, but you cannot apply latex paint over alkyd paint. Is a base coat the same as a primer?
No. Base coats and top coats are NOT the same thing. There are 2 common base coats- one is primer which covers the bare material and provides a surface onto which the color coat will adhere. A top coat can also be the final color but it is formulated differently so that it maintains it's strength and appearance.

How long does it take for an undercoat to dry?
Allow a minimum of 6 hours for the undercoat to dry before applying the gloss finish. Where a second coat of Dulux Trade High Gloss is required, allow a minimum of 16 hours between coats. Dulux Trade Undercoat is a solvent-based undercoat recommended for use with Dulux Trade High Gloss.

How are primer and paint different?
Without getting too technical, the basic difference between paint and primer is that of resins versus pigments. The resins contained in primers seal porous surfaces and provide the bond to the surface. This is primer's most basic function, to provide a sealed, bonded, stable surface on which to apply your topcoat.

Can you use an oil based paint over a water based primer?
Some can be recoated with finish paint in less than an hour. It is recommended you always use a primer before embarking on a painting job. For best results use an oil-based primer if your top coat is oil based paint, or latex based primer if your top coat is latex-based paint.

Is primer and sealer the same thing?
Most manufacturers offer a product that performs as both primer and sealer, so that you get the advantages of sealing and adhesion at the same time. Also, primers tend to be less expensive than finish coats, so by using a first-coat primer and one finish-paint coat, you may save money over using two finish coats.

Is matt or silk paint better for walls?
Matt emulsion is smooth, velvety and helps to hide imperfections on less-than-perfect walls. Silk is a finish associated with walls and satin for woodwork. What does emulsion paint do?
The ranges usually offer matt, eggshell, silk, satin and full gloss. Although normally thought of as for internal walls and ceilings, there are water based types of emulsion specially produced for woodwork. These are easy to apply but do not give the same hard-wearing qualities as oil-based paints.

Can you use matt paint on wood?
It gives the paint a decent surface to stick to and gives a much better finish. Use a wood primer or multi-purpose primer/undercoat on wood, and a metal primer for metal. If you can't face the bother of eggshell or gloss, you can get a good and surprisingly hard-wearing finish using emulsion paint.

Can you use emulsion paint on wood?
No, You can not paint wood with emulsion as it wont give smooth finish, first of all paint wont stick to the wood surface. Emulsions are plastic paints, usually mixed with water to paint. Best option would be to use Enamel Paint for the Wood or better use Wood Polish.

Can I use house paint on wood?
Any latex paint color you've used on your walls can work for refurbishing wood furniture, but it is important to use some of that leftover primer first to get a smooth finish and cover well. Leftover paint can also be used as a primer.

What kind of paint to use on wood furniture?
For furniture it's best to use a satin or semigloss finish in either a latex or an oil-based paint. Never leave primer unpainted. If you choose a latex paint, a latex primer is an excellent choice for most uses. It goes on easily and blocks most stains, but it doesn't have the odor of an oil-based primer.

Can you paint over varnished wood without sanding?
To get paint to adhere to wood, you usually have to sand to get it to grip, especially with anything that's varnished. You can paint without sanding by using a liquid sander deglosser! It removes the finish, giving it a rough texture without the effort.

Can I paint my kitchen cabinets?
If you want professional-style results, it's imperative to prime the boxes, door fronts and drawers before you begin painting. Once your primer has dried, use an angled brush and a mini foam roller to apply your paint. A latex satin finish works well on kitchen cabinets and it isn't as hard to work with as oil paint.
