What is the compaction test?
The Proctor compaction test is a laboratory method of experimentally determining the optimal moisture content at which a given soil type will become most dense and achieve its maximum dry density. This process is then repeated for various moisture contents and the dry densities are determined for each.
Standard Proctor Compaction Test: Standard Proctor Compaction Testing can be performed in a lab. The testing first determines the maximum density achievable for the soil and uses it as a reference for field testing. It also is effective for testing the effects of moisture on the soil's density.
- This process is called compaction. At the same time the particles of sediment begin to stick to each other - they are cemented together by clay, or by minerals like silica or calcite. After compaction and cementation the sedimentary sequence has changed into a sedimentary rock.
- As a memory pool is allocated from, over time the pool will become fragmented. Some objects from the pool will be allocated surrounded by objects that are not, in seemingly random order. Memory compaction is the process of moving allocated objects together and leaving empty space together.
- In sedimentology compaction refers to the process by which a sediment progressively loses its porosity due to the effects of loading. This forms part of the process of lithification.
Effects of compaction on pore space. Soil compaction occurs when soil particles are pressed together, reducing pore space between them (Figure 1). Heavily compacted soils contain few large pores and have a reduced rate of both water infiltration and drainage from the compacted layer.
- In geotechnical engineering, soil compaction is the process in which a stress applied to a soil causes densification as air is displaced from the pores between the soil grains. Normally, compaction is the result of heavy machinery compressing the soil, but it can also occur due to the passage of (e.g.) animal feet.

- Soil crusting is a thin layer of dense and tough material. Soil crusting is considerably more compacted and packed than the underlying material. A soil crust tends to look smooth and even when compared to freshly exposed soil. Rain impact on exposed soil is the main cause of soil crusting.
