What is Teflon made of and what is it used for?

The finished coating is a dried, durable nonstick material which delivers the easy clean and nonstick performance that you expect from your cookware coated with Teflon™ nonstick. Chemours nonstick coatings for cookware are based on PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), which is a high-performance fluoropolymer.

What do the letters in PTFE stand for?

PTFE stands for Polytetrafluoroethylene and is used amongst plumbers, but is also very useful for emergency plumbers. (PTFE) was discovered back in 1938 by a guy called Roy Plunkett, who worked for Kinetic Chemicals.

What are the elements of Teflon?

Polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE, is made of a carbon backbone chain, and each carbon has two fluorine atoms attached to it.
