What is single phasing of induction motor?

Updated: 18th November 2019

It is well known that a three-phase induction motor will continue to operate when a disturbance of some sort causes the voltages supplied to the motor to become single-phase. The single-phasing can occur as a result of a fuse blowing or protective device opening on one phase of the motor.

Keeping this in view, what does it mean when a motor is single phasing?

Single-Phasing. The term single-phasing, means one of the phases is open. A single-phasing condition subjects an electric motor to the worst possible case of voltage unbalance.

How do you start a single phase motor?

When the stator of a single phase motor is fed with single phase supply, it produces alternating flux in the stator winding. The alternating current flowing through stator winding causes induced current in the rotor bars (of the squirrel cage rotor ) according to Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction.
