What is Red 40 made out of?

Red 40 is a chemical compound that comes from coal tars. Dyes made from coal tars are created by mixing various fragrant smelling hydrocarbons like benzyne and toluene. Back in the day (think: ancient Egyptians) dye was made from things found in nature, like flowers, leaves, roots, etc.

Considering this, why is red dye bad for ADHD?

CSPI charges that the FDA is not enforcing the law in several regards: Red 3 and Citrus Red 2 should be banned under the Delaney amendment, because they caused cancer in rats (some uses were banned in 1990), as should Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6, which are tainted with cancer-causing contaminants.
