What is meant by baseline in project management?
In project management there are three baselines – schedule baseline, cost baseline and scope baseline. The combination of all three baselines is referred to as the performance measurement baseline. A baseline is a fixed schedule, which represents the standard that is used to measure the performance of the project.
Project Control Engineers develop, implement and maintain cost controls on a project, and provide centralized planning and scheduling on many projects. Project Control Engineers are employed in many different industries, including and manufacturing and construction, and their specific duties vary based on the industry.
- A project control specialist keeps things on track. They serve as a liaison between management and the builders of big projects including highways, power plants, or skyscrapers, as well things like software or fighter jets.
- Program process monitoring is an assessment of the process of a program or intervention. Process monitoring falls under the overall evaluation of a program. Program evaluation involves answering questions about a social program in a systematic way.
- Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) is a process that helps improve performance and achieve results. Its goal is to improve current and future management of outputs, outcomes and impact.
The Monitoring and Controlling process oversees all the tasks and metrics necessary to ensure that the approved and authorized project is within scope, on time, and on budget so that the project proceeds with minimal risk. Monitoring and Controlling process is continuously performed throughout the life of the project.
- Monitor and Control Project Work is the process of tracking, reviewing, and reporting the progress to meet the performance objectives defined in the project management plan. The inputs, tools and techniques, and outputs for this process are depicted in Figure 4-8.
- The Project Closure Phase is the fourth and last phase in the project life cycle. Project Closure involves handing over the deliverables to your customer, passing the documentation to the business, cancelling supplier contracts, releasing staff and equipment, and informing stakeholders of the closure of the project.

Realistic Project Planning. Project management is important because it ensures proper expectations are set around what can be delivered, by when, and for how much. Effective project managers should be able to negotiate reasonable and achievable deadlines and milestones across stakeholders, teams, and management.
- The project schedule is the tool that communicates what work needs to be performed, which resources of the organization will perform the work and the timeframes in which that work needs to be performed. The project schedule should reflect all of the work associated with delivering the project on time.
- Project planning is part of project management, which relates to the use of schedules such as Gantt charts to plan and subsequently report progress within the project environment. Initially, the project scope is defined and the appropriate methods for completing the project are determined.
