Lua (programming language) Lua (/ˈluː?/ LOO-?; from Portuguese: lua [ˈlu.(w)?] meaning moon) is a lightweight, multi-paradigm programming language designed primarily for embedded use in applications.

In video game development, Lua is widely used as a scripting language by game programmers, perhaps due to its perceived easiness to embed, fast execution, and short learning curve. In 2003, a poll conducted by GameDev.net showed Lua as the most popular scripting language for game programming.

When was Lua created?

Abstract. Since its inception, in 1993, the Lua programming language has gone far beyond our most optimistic expectations. In this paper, we describe the trajectory of Lua, from its creation as an in-house language for two specific projects, until Lua 4.0, released in November 2000.
