What is less dense?

The density of an object determines whether it will float or sink in another substance. An object will float if it is less dense than the liquid it is placed in. An object will sink if it is more dense than the liquid it is placed in.

Is paper less dense than water?

Water also has a certain mass compared to its volume and a certain density. Comparing the density of an object to the density of water can tell you whether the object will sink or float. The rock is more dense than water so the rock sinks. The wood is less dense than water so the wood floats.
