Forced warm air heating is the most common type of heating system found in homes today. The operating principle behind these systems is quite simple. All the basic components in the system are contained in an air-handling unit referred to as a furnace.

Furnaces & Heaters. Sometimes referred to as forced air systems, these heating systems burn natural gas, propane, oil, or use electricity to heat your home, and are the most commonly used heating systems. Air is heated in the furnace and then distributed throughout your house via ductwork.

Forced Air. A forced air heating system simply refers to units that use air to carry warmth throughout a space. Homes with central heating and built-in duct work often use this system. The furnace is typically located in the center of the home or in the basement.
Gas-fired equipment costs less than oil-fired gear. For a basic furnace (for a forced air heating system) or boiler (for hot-water heat), you'll pay around $1,500 to $3,000 for gas and $2,000 to as much as $8,000 for oil, says Ellis Guiles of TAG Mechanical in Syracuse, New York.
Forced-air gas heating systems are used in central air heating/cooling systems for houses. Sometimes the system is referred to as "Forced hot air".

Baseboard heating really refers to two separate kinds of heating systems. Electric baseboard heaters are individual units that heat a house room-by-room. They require no central heating and no expensive duct work. Hydronic heating is ideally used with radiant heat systems, where the heating pipes run under your floor.

A standard that is used by heating and cooling equipment companies is to provide at least 25 to 30 Btu of heat per square feet in the home for a moderate to warm climate. A mid-sized home of 2,000 square feet would need approximately 50,000 to 60,000 Btu to heat it properly.
