The two have an inverse relationship, that is, when elevation increases, atmospheric pressure decreases. This is due to the amount of air on top of you at your current elevation. At lower elevations, you have more air above you, and thus more pressure.
As the pressure changes with the altitude on takeoff, you might experience ear popping or pain from that change. The barometric pressure doesn't have to change drastically to cause headaches, either. In a study published in 2015, researchers looked at the effects of barometric pressure on people with chronic migraines.
The different types of pressure are differentiated only by the reference pressure.
