What is a photovoltaic material?
Photovoltaics are best known as a method for generating electric power by using solar cells to convert energy from the sun into a flow of electrons by the photovoltaic effect. Photovoltaic power generation employs solar panels composed of a number of solar cells containing a photovoltaic material.

- Solar cells, also called photovoltaic (PV) cells by scientists, convert sunlight directly into electricity. PV gets its name from the process of converting light (photons) to electricity (voltage), which is called the PV effect.
- Energy which is substantially produced without deplatation of natural resources therefore solar energy, such as the phovoltaic one, is undoubtely a renewable energy while electricity made using coal, natural gas or oil is electricity non renewable.
Simply put, a solar panel works by allowing photons, or particles of light, to knock electrons free from atoms, generating a flow of electricity. Solar panels actually comprise many, smaller units called photovoltaic cells. (Photovoltaic simply means they convert sunlight into electricity.)
- The PV modules gather solar energy in the form of sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter can convert this DC power into alternating current (AC power, which is the type of electricity used in your home). PV modules are joined together to form a PV Solar Panel system.
- How do solar panels work?
- Step 1: Solar panels collect sunlight. Every solar panel contains something called photovoltaic, or PV, cells.
- Step 2: Inverters convert the solar power to usable electricity. On the back of each solar panel is an inverter.
- Step 3: Electricity flows into net meter.
- Step 4: Fire up the toaster.
- However, while that's usually the case with a central inverter (which handles the output of all the panels), a newer type, the so-called 'micro-inverters', are installed or included with each solar panel, and are said to have a much longer lifespan (up to 25 years), and could last for decades as well.
