What is a hop in a traceroute?
In Windows, traceroute sends ICMP echo requests instead of UDP packets. The time-to-live (TTL) value, also known as hop limit, is used in determining the intermediate routers being traversed towards the destination. The router sends an ICMP Time Exceeded message back to the source.
1) In a packet-switching network, a hop is the trip a data packet takes from one router or intermediate point to another in the network. On the Internet (or a network that uses TCP/IP), the number of hops a packet has taken toward its destination (called the "hop count") is kept in the packet header.

Traceroute works by sending packets by increasing the TTL (Time to Live) value one by one. TTL is the number of hops packet can take before being dropped.
In networking, a hop count is the total number of intermediate devices such as routers through which a given piece of data must pass between the source and destination, instead of flowing directly over a single wire. Along the data path, each router forms a hop, with data moving from one source to another.
- It is only verified against a predefined maximum on an EIGRP router (by default it is set to 100 and can be changed to any value between 1 and 255). Routes having a hop count higher than the maximum will be advertised as unreachable by an EIGRP router.
- BGP is used by internet service providers (ISPs) and telecommunication companies. Among the distance-vector protocols that have been described as a hybrid, because it uses routing methods associated with link-state routing protocols, is the proprietary Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP).

RIP prevents routing loops by implementing a limit on the number of hops allowed in a path from source to destination. The largest number of hops allowed for RIP is 15, which limits the size of networks that RIP can support.
