What is a filler pass?
Face - On plate or pipe welding there is a ROOT PASS, HOT PASS, FILLER PASS, and CAP. The root penetrates through the back of the plate, the cap is on the surface which you are welding, which is the face. Filler Metal - This is metal added to the weld pool. A weld can be made with or without filler metal.

- A type of weld that consists of an opening between two part surfaces, which provides space to contain weld metal. Groove welds are used on all joints except lap joints. horizontal-position welding.
- Advantages of Brazing: Brazing has many advantages over other metal-joining techniques like welding. They are as follows: Brazing does not melt the base metal of the joint, it allows much tighter control over tolerances and produces a clean joint without the need for secondary finishing.
- Porosity is a weld defect that is fairly common, but also fairly easy to fix. Porosity is weld metal contamination in the form of a trapped gas. Shielding gases or gases released as a result of the torch being applied to treated metal are absorbed into the molten metal and released as solidification takes place.
There are 5 pieces to each Fillet weld known as the Root, Toe, Face, Leg and Throat. The root of the weld is the part of deepest penetration which is the opposite angle of the Hypotenuse. The toes of the weld are essentially the edges or the points of the hypotenuse.

- Keyhole - When welding an open butt, or open groove weld JOINT with STICK, MIG or TIG, a "keyhole" will open up. When the sides of the plate burn away on each side of the WELD POOL a hole is formed which allows for good TIE IN and PENETRATION.
In order to ensure the material strength of a part is retained after welding, a process known as Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) is regularly performed. PWHT can be used to reduce residual stresses, as a method of hardness control, or even to enhance material strength.
- Relieving residual stress through welding technique as well as temperature control can greatly reduce weld distortion. It's a shame arc welding works so well. Immediately after being deposited and subsequent fusion between the base and weld metal, the metal cools quickly.
- The result of a pass is a weld bead and may include several stops and starts. the procedure definition for interpass temperature as the maximum temperature of a section of the deposited weld metal and adjacent base material immmedialtey prior to welding again in that section for multipass welds.
- To some engineers it is a rather vague term that is used to describe any heat treatment that is carried out when welding is complete. When an engineer talks of post weld heat treatment, annealing, tempering or stress relief it is therefore advisable.
