A delta-wye transformer is a type of three-phase electric power transformer design that employs delta-connected windings on its primary and wye/star connected windings on its secondary. It can be a single three-phase transformer, or built from three independent single-phase units.
What is Delta electrical connection?
A "delta" connected transformer winding is connected between phases of a three-phase system. A "wye" transformer connects each winding from a phase wire to a common neutral point. In an "open delta" or "V" system, only two transformers are used.
In three phase systems, the use of transformers with three windings (or legs) per side is common. These three windings are often connected in delta or star, resulting in common transformer configurations such as delta-delta or delta-star. An open delta transformer is a special arrangement which uses only two windings.

As a step-down unit, this transformer converts high-voltage, low-current power into low-voltage, high-current power. The larger-gauge wire used in the secondary winding is necessary due to the increase in current. The primary winding, which doesn't have to conduct as much current, may be made of smaller-gauge wire.
That is the input and output voltages for the windings are the same. However, if the 3-phase transformer is connected in star–delta, ( Yd ) each star-connected primary winding will receive the phase voltage, VP of the supply, which is equal to 1/√3 × VL.
Also please note that as transformers require an alternating magnetic flux to operate correctly, transformers cannot therefore be used to transform or supply DC voltages or currents, since the magnetic field must be changing to induce a voltage in the secondary winding.
Line voltage (line-to-line voltage) in a polyphase system is the voltage between two given phases. On the other hand, Phase voltage is the voltage between the given phase and neutral. Note that neutral is available in star connection but not delta connection.
Wye Start Delta Run. This method is actually reduced voltage but is accomplished by changing the motor phase connections such that a winding that is designed to run with phase voltage equal to line voltage on delta connection is wye connected for starting to put less than line voltage on each phase.
