Other fruits with seeds rich with Vitamin B17 are peaches and plums as well as the seeds in cherries, prunes and nectarines. The tiny seeds in apples, grapes and those in berries, such as, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries, elderberries and wild crabapples are high in Vitamin B17.
Trish was a big believer in alternative cancer treatments. Specifically, she believed that people with cancer should consume B17, also known as amygdalin or laetrile. B17 occurred naturally in the seeds of apricots, peaches and almonds. The only problem with this was that B17 was banned in the US and contained cyanide.
- Amygdalin is a plant substance found in raw nuts and the pips of many fruits, particularly apricot pips or kernels. It is also found in plants like lima beans, clover and sorghum. Some people call laetrile vitamin B17, although it isn't a vitamin.
- Pangamic acid is the name given to a product originally claimed to contain D-gluconodimethyl aminoacetic acid, which was obtained from apricot kernels and later from rice bran. It is also referred to as vitamin B15, but pangamic acid is not generally recognized as a vitamin.
- It is known for containing amygdalin, a poisonous compound. Together with the related synthetic compound laetrile, amygdalin has been marketed as an alternative cancer treatment. Apricot kernels can cause potentially fatal cyanide poisoning when consumed.
People who eat large numbers of apricot seeds are at risk of cyanide poisoning. When amygdalin is eaten, it converts to cyanide in the body. It is estimated that eating 50-60 apricot kernels would deliver a lethal dose of cyanide. Cyanide poisoning can occur at much lower levels, however.
- Purchasing Vitamin B17 is not without risks, however, because the product is not FDA-approved. Overseas purchasing is possible, but those who are not comfortable with the legalities and risks of this option may opt for Vitamin B17 from a natural food source: raw apricot seeds or kernels.
- It is claimed they contain high levels of B17, otherwise known as amygdalin. Sweet apricot kernels, along with almonds and pips of other small fruits such as cherries, apples, and grapes, also contain small levels of amygdalin but at a much lower and more tolerable level than that found in bitter apricot kernels.
- "The edible portions of dietary plant species commonly used in the United States contain relatively low levels of cyanogen glycosides, although some pits and seeds of common fruits, apple, apricot, peach, contain significantly higher concentrations." One hundred grams of moist peach seed contains 88 mg of cyanide.
Subsequently, the Food and Drug Administration declared laetrile illegal. Several states fought the FDA action but courts backed the government, ending laetrile's heyday by 1980. Now laetrile is rebounding on the Internet, sometimes sold under the aliases amygdalin or “vitamin B17.”
