What does the beginning of skin cancer look like?

This nonmelanoma skin cancer may appear as a firm red nodule, a scaly growth that bleeds or develops a crust, or a sore that doesn't heal. It most often occurs on the nose, forehead, ears, lower lip, hands, and other sun-exposed areas of the body. Squamous cell carcinoma is curable if caught and treated early.

Keeping this in consideration, what can cause your skin to get darker?

A common cause of hyperpigmentation is an excess production of melanin. Melanin is a pigment that gives skin its color. Endocrine diseases, like Addison's disease, disrupt hormone levels and can increase melanin production. Excessive sun exposure can also cause an increase in melanin.

What is discoloration of the skin called?

Your skin gets its color from a pigment called melanin. Special cells in the skin make melanin. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production. Some pigmentation disorders affect just patches of skin. Vitiligo is a condition that causes patches of light skin.
