What does it mean when your lower back and hips hurt?
When the spine is the likely culprit. Most lower spine problems are caused by a herniated disc that presses on nerves in the spinal column. This produces the pain known as sciatica, which can be felt in the hip. Is limited to your back, buttocks or hip.
The majority of people with back pain are able to adjust how they sleep to get relief from the pain they experience during the day. But with nighttime back pain -- also called nocturnal back pain -- the hurting doesn't stop when a person lies down, no matter what adjustments he or she makes.
- They usually cause awakenings from sleep, but they may also occur while awake at night during periods of inactivity. These cramps mostly happen in the calf muscles but can also occur in the thighs or feet. Nocturnal leg cramps are quite painful and cause the affected muscles to feel tight or knotted.
- If you have a cramp, these actions may provide relief:
- Stretch and massage. Stretch the cramped muscle and gently rub it to help it relax. For a calf cramp, put your weight on your cramped leg and bend your knee slightly.
- Apply heat or cold. Use a warm towel or heating pad on tense or tight muscles.
- Do this core-strengthening pelvic tilt 2 to 3 times per week: Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat on the floor, and lower back flattened. Pull in your belly button toward your spine, contracting your abs; your pelvis should lift slightly off the floor. Do 2 to 3 sets of 12 reps.
Measures you can take to relieve the pain of bursitis include:
- Rest and don't overuse the affected area.
- Apply ice to reduce swelling for the first 48 hours after symptoms occur.
- Apply dry or moist heat, such as a heating pad or taking a warm bath.
- Bursitis is caused by overuse or excessive pressure on the joint, injury, infection, or an underlying condition, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, pseudogout, or ankylosing spondylitis. When bursitis is caused by an underlying condition, the condition must be treated along with bursitis.
- In most cases, you can treat tendonitis and bursitis at home with rest, ice and over-the-counter anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen or naproxen. It may seem simple, but also try to avoid the motion that originally caused the pain. Give about four to six weeks for these home remedies to help.
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. Oral anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen (e.g. Advil), naproxen (e.g. Aleve), and cox-2 inhibitors (e.g. Celebrex) can reduce swelling and inflammation and relieve pain associated with shoulder bursitis and tendonitis. Topical medications.
The first symptom of trochanteric bursitis is usually pain . Eventually the pain may radiate down the outside of the thigh. As the problem progresses, the symptoms produce a limp when walking and stiffness in the hip joint. Eventually, the pain will also be present at rest and may even cause a problem with sleeping.
- Bursa injection can help soothe joint pain caused by arthritis, bursitis and other painful inflammatory diseases. But a steroid medication injected into your bursa can help reduce the inflammation and alleviate the pain.
- In the absence of a recent trauma, hip pain in adults is most often caused by some form of arthritis. The hip connects the torso to the leg, and hip-related pain may not be felt directly at the hip. Instead, pain may be felt in the groin, down the thigh, inner knee, buttock or lower back.
- If complete pain relief is achieved while the hip joint is numb it means this joint is likely to be the source of pain. Pain relief function: Along with the numbing medication, time-release cortisone is also injected into these joints to reduce inflammation, which can often provide long term pain relief.
