What are the two main functions of DNA?

DNA therefore has two essential functions: replication and expression.
  • Replication means that the DNA, with all its genes, must be copied every time a cell divides.
  • Expression means that the genes on DNA must control characteristics. A gene is a section of DNA that codes for a particular protein.

What function does DNA serve?

DNA contains the instructions needed for an organism to develop, survive and reproduce. To carry out these functions, DNA sequences must be converted into messages that can be used to produce proteins, which are the complex molecules that do most of the work in our bodies.
