Siri is powered by some very interesting technology, which tries to understand not just your words but your sentences. Understanding meaning is a lot trickier than just identifying words. It's improved a lot with iOS 9, too. No longer is Siri a separate module within iOS, or one that exists merely because it's cool.
What is the purpose of Siri?
Siri is a built-in "intelligent assistant" that enables users of Apple iPhone 4S and later and newer iPad and iPod Touch devices to speak natural language voice commands in order to operate the mobile device and its apps.
Is Siri a boy or a girl?
It's worth noting that on U.K. iPhones, Siri's default voice is that of a male and not female like it is in the U.S. So you'll have to picture Siri cursing the poor boy out with a male British accent.
Google's artificial intelligence (AI) is much smarter than Apple's Siri, according to a report from three Chinese researchers. In 2014, Google's IQ was 26.5, and Microsoft's was 13.5.
Given what we've seen in the explosion of AI assistants and software bots from other companies, you'd expect Google to brand these products' connective tissue with a personality and a name — Apple has Siri, Amazon has Alexa, and Microsoft has Cortana. Instead, Google's new AI assistant is just called… Google Assistant.
We've found it to be much smarter than Siri and, to prove it, we recently put it head-to-head with Apple's assistant. We asked Google Assistant and Siri the same questions to give you an idea of what you can expect from both. Each of the commands below was asked to both assistants.
Even those who don't own an iPhone or iPad know about Siri, a smart voice-powered Apple's assistant. Siri is supposed to do everything a personal assistant would – schedule dates, set reminders, find directions, send messages or make calls. You can ask Siri whatever you want and get a plausible answer.
If Siri is launching things because it thinks she hears you when you did not say anything, that should fix the problem. To turn off “Hey Siri” go to Settings and tap Siri, then turn off the Hey Siri feature. If iTunes Radio keeps coming on you can turn off “use Cellular Data” to address that problem.

In iOS 9, a new voice recognition feature allows you to "train" Siri to respond to the command from your voice only. To enable it, toggle to Settings > General > Siri and select "Allow 'Hey Siri.'" Once enabled, you'll be prompted to go through a quick five-step process so Siri can "learn" your voice.
Apple's Siri is not the only mobile virtual assistant in town. There's Google Now for Android devices, Cortana for Microsoft's Windows Phone and plenty of third-party “artificial intelligence” apps that try to make your mobile calendar or contact lists smarter.
Google Now is built into Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and above, and you can also now get it as a free iOS app (it's part of the Google Search app). On Android, you'll probably have a Google search bar on your home screen and you can tap it to bring up Google Now, or you can select Google from the app drawer.
One of the standout new features found in Windows 10 is the addition of Cortana. For those unfamiliar, Cortana is a voice-activated personal assistant. Think of it as Siri, but for Windows. You can use it to get weather forecasts, set reminders, tell you jokes, send email, find files, search the Internet and so on.

Google's digital assistant can't tell a joke. And Siri apparently has a thing for the metric system. Apple's Siri and "OK Google" — they're not big on personification at Google — are now standard on smartphones; Microsoft recently added its Cortana service to Windows 10, so it works on PCs, too.
