Is NH4Cl a strong or weak acid or base?
The reaction between NH3 (weak base) and HCl (strong acid) forms NH4Cl. NH4+ acts as a weak acid and Cl- does not act like a base, same as NO3-. This means the salt will be weakly acidic. So to determine if a salt acts as a weak base or weak acid, simply look at the cation and anion.
Weak acids and bases have strong conjugate bases and acids. For example, when ammonium chloride is dissolved in water, it gives an acidic solution because ammonium ion is a strong conjugate acid of the weak base ammonia, but chloride ion is a weak conjugate base of the strong acid hydrochloric acid.
- For the first part of the question, NH4CL contains both an iconic and covalent bond. The ammonium ion is polyatomic, which means it forms ionic salts. Therefore whatever bonds it makes are ionic. That said however, the bond between N and H is covalent because both N and H are non-metals.
- Both ammonia is a weak base and ammonium ion is a weak acid. Many, even most, acid/base conjugate pairs are like that.

Ammonium chloride salt is a mixture of weak base and strong acid , NH4Cl = NH4OH+ HCl and this when gets dissolved in water it gets disassociated in weak base and strong acid and when HCl is formed it makes solution acidic. Ammonium ion ( NH4+ ) is a conjugate acids formed by one proton gained by Ammonia ( NH3 ).
- In AlCl3 Al has incomplete octet . It is electron deficient it can accept electrons . According to the Lewis concept anything which accept electrons is acid and which donates electrons is base therefore AlCl3 is a Lewis acid.

The solution of such a salt is acidic in nature. The cation of the salt which has come from weak base is reactive. It reacts with water to form a weak base and H+ ions. Consider, for example, NH4Cl.
- Ammonia is a typical weak base. Ammonia itself obviously doesn't contain hydroxide ions, but it reacts with water to produce ammonium ions and hydroxide ions. However, the reaction is reversible, and at any one time about 99% of the ammonia is still present as ammonia molecules.
- Ammonium chloride is an inorganic compound with the formula NH4Cl and a white crystalline salt that is highly soluble in water. Solutions of ammonium chloride are mildly acidic. It is the product from the reaction of hydrochloric acid and ammonia.
- It neither ionizes to form hydrogen ions, nor does it dissociates to give hydroxide ions. Therefore, it is neither an acid nor a base. In fact, CaCl2, or calcium chloride, is a salt. You can prepare NaCl by the reaction of NaOH (a base) and HCl (an acid) and the reaction of an acid with a base always gives a salt.
