The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, better known as MERS, may be an airborne virus, according to an observation paper published Tuesday in the journal mBio. Scientists are still trying to figure out how the deadly virus is transmitted.

Also to know is, is MERS contagious?

Researchers know that, like other respiratory viruses, MERS is highly contagious because it is spread through droplets—from when a person coughs or sneezes, for instance. But other mechanics of how the virus behaves are a mystery. SARS and MERS are in the same larger family of viruses, called coronaviruses.

Can MERS be treated?

There are currently no vaccines available for MERS. Medical care is provided to support and relieve the signs and symptoms of MERS. However, there are no treatments available to cure the infection. There are precautions that you can take to protect yourself against infections.

How is the coronavirus transmitted?

Most coronaviruses spread the same way other cold-causing viruses do, through infected people coughing and sneezing, by touching an infected person's hands or face, or by touching things such as doorknobs that infected people have touched.
