For occasional deep cleaning (dirt, oil and grime will build up over time), the best solution for cleaning wood floors is one cup of vinegar mixed with one gallon of water. Immerse a clean mop into the solution and wring it until it is damp-dry.
Use proper tools to clean your floor – a mop paired with a machine washable, microfiber pad for dusting and cleaning. Electrostatic action attracts dirt, microparticles and common household allergens. Avoid using water and vinegar, soap-based cleaners, wax or steam cleaners on your hardwood floors.
According to the manufacturer's website, the Swiffer mop is appropriate for use on finished hardwood floors when you use either the dry or wet refill cloths. Wet refills aren't recommended for use on unfinished, waxed or oiled floors, and you should use them with caution on finished hardwood.

Cleaning with vinegar and water is cheap, safe for the environment and generally does a great job at cleaning many items in your home. Just don't use vinegar and water to clean hardwood floors. Using vinegar and water as a homemade hardwood floor cleaning solution can have a negative effect on your hardwood floor.
Dilute ¼ cup of Pine-Sol in 1 gallon of water in a bucket. Mop your wood floor with the solution, being sure not to leave puddles, which can crack and warp wood flooring. Use Pine-Sol straight out of the bottle on stubborn floor stains such as grease.
Below I have listed the simple steps that should be taken:
- Thoroughly sweep or vacuum your floor.
- Using a ratio of one gallon of warm water to a half cup of white vinegar fill up a clean bucket.
- Plunge a clean mop into the water/vinegar mixture and ensure it is thoroughly wrung out before mopping.
- Mop away!
Vacuum or dry mop the floor. It's critical to remove all the surface dust, dirt, lint and hair before mopping. Fill a clean bucket with a solution of white vinegar and warm water. Use a half a cup of white vinegar to one gallon of warm water.
Mopping with Vinegar – Safe for most Floor Types. Mix together 1/4 cup of white vinegar with a 1 quart of water in your bucket. Mop in small sections and when you need to rinse your mop try to rinse it in the sink before putting it back into your vinegar solution so you are not putting the dirt into the clean solution.
