It's typically made of slightly stretchy PVC vinyl, and is backed with a pressure sensitive rubber-type adhesive. It has good insulative properties, and is perfect for protecting wire splices and providing extra insulation on electrical cords.
Electrical tape (or insulating tape) is a type of pressure-sensitive tape used to insulate electrical wires and other materials that conduct electricity. It can be made of many plastics, but vinyl is most popular, as it stretches well and gives an effective and long lasting insulation.
If you're in a pinch, duct tape is a quick leaky pipe fix. As with the other fixes, turn off the water supply and dry the area before fixing the leak. Wrap the duct tape as tightly as you can around the pipe several times in order to create a tight seal.
While duct tape is the go-to material for fixing or patching just about anything in a pinch, it is not entirely waterproof. Most duct tape is water resistant, keeping moisture at bay for a short time, but eventually failing when wet.
The properties of rubber will also cause the electrons to slow down and eventually prevent them from moving at all. Keeping electricity bound within the material is the main goal of an insulator – making rubber a very good choice, especially in the form of electrical mats.

Duct tape is composed of three layers. The top layer is a plastic, polyethelyne; the middle layer is a fabric mesh; the bottom layer is a rubber-based, pressure sensitive adhesive. It was originally manufactured simply by pressing these three layers together and was named “Duck Tape”, not “Duct Tape”.
From the Manufacturer. This is an economical low voltage rubber vinyl insulating tape that is self-fusing. 3M Temflex 2155 Rubber Splicing Tape is used for insulating wire splices, split bolt connections, and motor leads up to 600V.
Overlap or flying splicing is done by applying a double-coated tape to the end of the web or roll. The liner of the tape is then removed to expose the second side of the adhesive and the new web, or roll is overlapped to the adhesive, and ultimately joining the two together.
Self-amalgamating tape is a non-tacky silicone-rubber tape which when stretched and wrapped around cables, electrical joints, hoses and pipes combines or unites itself into a strong, seamless, rubbery, waterproof, and electrically insulating layer.
Rescue Tape is the World's Best-Selling Brand of Self-Fusing Silicone Tape. Silicone Rescue Tape is an award-winning silicone repair tape for emergencies and all-purpose repairs. Rescue Tape creates an air-tight, waterproof seal in seconds.
Made from ethylene propylene rubber or butyl rubber, this class of tape is commonly used for insulating, water sealing and padding of connections prior to being over-wrapped with other tapes. They are self-amalgamating, water-resistant, ozone resistant (EPR), weather resistant and UV stable (black).
Made with double-thick adhesive, strong reinforced backing, and a tough all-weather shell, this duct tape is great for projects and repairs both indoors and out. Gorilla tape sticks to smooth, rough and uneven surfaces, including wood, stone, stucco, brick, metal and vinyl.
Duct tape was originally invented by Johnson & Johnson's Permacel division during WWII for the military. The military specifically needed a waterproof tape that could be used to keep moisture out of ammunition cases. As to why it was originally called “Duck” tape by the soldiers isn't entirely known.
To use this remedy: Apply a small piece of duct tape directly to the area of your wart and go about your day. Once every three to six days, remove the duct tape and rub the wart with an emery board or pumice stone. You may also consider soaking the wart in warm water while it's exposed.
Nashua Waterproofing Repair Tape combines tough, durable foil with tacky butyl rubber adhesive to form an instant waterproof bond that permanently seals leaks and gaps. Ideal for sheet metal and greenhouse repair applications.
I think its more waterproof than standard duct tape. I heard way back of some people that were white water rafting used Gorilla Tape to repair their raft and made it back to camp safely. like any duct tape applied to a dry surface, it is water resistant, not water proof. cannot be submerged in water for long.
T-Rex Tape offers a waterproof backing to repel the fiercest weather conditions. Make sure you apply T-Rex Tape when the surface is dry to get the best waterproofing performance.
Gorilla tape has taken duct tape to a new level. This double thick adhesive tape surpasses ordinary duct tapes, making the list of uses virtually endless. Made with double thick adhesive, strong reinforced backing, and a tough all-weather shell, it's the biggest, strongest, toughest thing ever to happen to duct tape.
