What is the meaning of dB?
The decibel (dB) is an expression often used in electrical and acoustic measurements. The decibel is a number that represents a ratio of two values of a quantity such as voltage. It is actually a logarithmic ratio whose main purpose is to scale a large measurement range down to a much smaller and more useable range.
A human voice (when shouting) can be measured between 90 to 120 decibels. Extremely unpleasant, so say the least. It would be about equal to having a siren blowing in your ear.
Sounds of less than 75 decibels, even after long exposure, are unlikely to cause hearing loss. However, long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 decibels can cause hearing loss. The louder the sound, the shorter the amount of time it takes for NIHL to happen.
Therefore, train horns are louder and lower in frequency than car horns, so that they can be heard at longer distances. The sound level is 146–175 dB. In the United States, train horns are required to have a minimum sound level of 96 dB and a maximum sound level of 110 dB at 100 ft in front of the train.
The world's loudest sound. The sound made by the Krakatoa volcanic eruption in 1883 was so loud it ruptured eardrums of people 40 miles away, travelled around the world four times, and was clearly heard 3,000 miles away.
Then a "3-dB exchange rate" formula is applied, which means that for every 3 dB above 85 dBA, the maximum exposure time is cut in half. Noise levels above 140 dB are not considered safe for any period of time, however brief. For children, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends no exposure above 120 dB.
Subjected to 45 decibels of noise, the average person cannot sleep. At 120 decibels the ear registers pain, but hearing damage begins at a much lower level, about 85 decibels. The duration of the exposure is also important.
Firearms Are Loud. Exposure to noise greater than 140 dB can permanently damage hearing. Almost all firearms create noise that is over the 140-dB level. A small .22-caliber rifle can produce noise around 140 dB, while big-bore rifles and pistols can produce sound over 175 dB.
What Is the difference between dB and dBA? dB sound pressure levels are unweighted. dBA levels are "A" weighted according to the weighting curves to approximate the way the human ear hears. For example, a 100 dB level at 100 Hz will be perceived to have a loudness equal to only 80 dB at 1000 Hz.
It doesn't take a lifetime of attending concerts or loud events to cause a hearing loss, you can damage your ears in just one event. Normal levels of conversation are around 65 decibels loud. Concert music levels can reach between 100 and 120 decibels loud.
Method 2 Measuring Decibels with Instruments
- Use your computer. With the right programs and equipment, it's not difficult to measure the decibel level of a sound using your computer.
- Use a mobile app. For measuring sound levels on the go, mobile apps can be extremely convenient.
- Use a professional decibel meter.
Measured in decibels (db) snoring usually falls between 60 and 80/90 decibels, compared to normal talking which is about 60 db, a vacuum cleaner which is 70 db, and a chainsaw, about 100 db. Loud snoring, then, is an indicator for earplugs.
A large commercial truck can produce air horn decibel levels of approximately 150 decibels. For comparison, a power lawn mower only generates 100 decibels of sound. Typically, vehicle air horns don't reach higher than this decibel level for the hearing safety of the surrounding public.

Typically, they range from 45 to 50 decibels—roughly the noise level of typing on a keyboard, and just below the threshold needed to wake someone up. Now compare that to dishwashers from the mid-2000s. Those machines averaged about 60 decibels—just below the sound level of a vacuum.

A stun grenade, also known as a flash grenade, flashbang, thunderflash or sound bomb, is a non-lethal explosive device used to temporarily disorient an enemy's senses. It is designed to produce a blinding flash of light of around 7 million candela (cd) and an intensely loud "bang" of greater than 170 decibels (dB).
Like a temperature scale, the decibel scale goes below zero. The average person can hear sounds down to about 0 dB, the level of rustling leaves. Some people with very good hearing can hear sounds down to -15 dB. If a sound reaches 85 dB or stronger, it can cause permanent damage to your hearing.

A-weighted decibels, abbreviated dBA, or dBa, or dB(a), are an expression of the relative loudness of sounds in air as perceived by the human ear. In the A-weighted system, the decibel values of sounds at low frequencies are reduced, compared with unweighted decibels, in which no correction is made for audio frequency.
