How long do you have to wait for paper mache to dry?

The drying time depends on a lot of factors, including temperature, humidity, and air flow. On hot Texas summer days I've had layers dry in as little as about 30 minutes, but if it's cold or humid out, it can take more than 24 hours for a layer to fully dry.

How many layers of paper mache do you need on a balloon?

If you wrap your balloons in newspaper first, it usually takes two layers of papier mâché before the walls are thick enough that the balloon can be removed. Depending on the ages of the kids who will be breaking it, two or three layers of papier mâché altogether is usually about right.

How do you do paper mache with a balloon?

  1. Blow up balloon and place in a large bowl for stability.
  2. Dip newspaper strips into glue mixture and papier-mache 3 layers of newspaper onto balloon.
  3. Section the papier-mache balloon into 8 equal lengthwise parts with 1/4-inch tape.
  4. Alternating colors, paint sections of balloon with craft paint.
  5. Remove tape.
