How does hyperthyroidism affect the human body?

Hyperthyroidism creates excess thyroid hormone. Since the thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the body's metabolism, not surprisingly, the disease increases the body's normal metabolic functions.

Keeping this in consideration, is hyperthyroidism a serious disease?

Yes, hyperthyroidism is serious. It is also treatable and not typically life threatening. When treated, the prognosis is good and symptoms are often greatly reduced and even eliminated. Left untreated, however, this disorder can put significant strain on the heart and several other organs.

Can Hyperthyroidism be fatal?

Thyroid storm is a rare and potentially fatal complication of hyperthyroidism. It typically occurs in patients with untreated or partially treated thyrotoxicosis who experience a precipitating event such as surgery, infection, or trauma.

Can overactive thyroid cause mental health problems?

The cause is sometimes abnormal thyroid hormone levels. Hyperthyroidism can cause anxiety, irritability and mood swings, while hypothyroidism can cause mental slowing and memory problems as well as depression.
