A 3-way lamp requires a 3-way bulb and socket, and a 3-way switch. Unlike an incandescent lamp controlled by a dimmer, each of the filaments operates at full voltage, so the color of the light does not change between the three steps of light available.
Is the wide blade hot or neutral?
This means the plug has a small blade for the hot wire and a wide blade for the neutral wire, and the wires feeding those blades should not be reversed when you put a new plug on. Always use a polarized plug for a lamp, extension cord or any other cord that's polarized to begin with.
Thus, if a 3-way bulb is screwed into a standard light socket that has only a center contact, only the medium-power filament operates. In the case of the 50 W / 100 W / 150 W bulb, putting this bulb in a regular lamp socket will result in it behaving like a normal 100W bulb.
The 3-way fixture is plugged into a dimmer switch that is plugged into the outlet. It works just fine. In my slightly frightening experiences, No you can't put a regular Or dimmable LED bulb in a 3 way lamp socket. I've tried it with two different bulbs from Osram Sylvania that claim they are dimmable.

Why Do Light Bulbs Burn Out Just As They're Turned On? Light bulbs give off light by pumping electric current through a thin tungsten filament. The filament heats and gives off light. Over time, the filament oxidises and becomes more and more brittle, until it breaks apart and the bulb goes out.
Dimmable LED Light Bulbs. Since LEDs consume such a low wattage, many types of dimmers do not function with LED in the same way that they do with high wattage load incandescents. When dimming an LED you may notice the following: Smaller amount of dimming range (Typically 70-90% range vs. 100% with incandescent)
Lamp power cords are usually single color paired wire (white, brown, etc). Look at the wire carefully. One side will have ribs on it and the other side will be smooth and will probably have markings on it. The smooth side is the hot and the ribbed side is the neutral.
"3-way" is the electrician's designation for a single pole double throw (SPDT) switch. The switches must create a complete circuit for current to flow and the bulb to light. When both switches are up, the circuit is complete (top right). When both switches are down, the circuit is complete (bottom right).
The A-series light bulb is the "classic" type of light bulb that has been the most commonly used type for general-purpose lighting applications since the early 20th century. It has a pear-like shape and an Edison screw base.
Toggling the switch disconnects one "traveler" terminal and connects the other. Electrically, a typical "3-way" switch is a single pole, double throw (SPDT) switch. By correctly connecting two of these switches together, toggling either switch changes the state of the load from off to on, or vice versa.
Check the bulb for a damaged filament. If the light bulb filament is broken, replace the light bulb. Use an incandescent light bulb to check the lamp's operation after plugging it back in. A compact fluorescent light (CFL) or LED (light-emitting diode) bulb only works in touch lamps if it is labeled as dimmable.
You just bought a touch lamp, which you can turn on and off by touching the base of the lamp. You might wonder if your lamp requires a special bulb, but it doesn't. You can use any standard bulb for your touch lamp. You do not need a special bulb for a touch lamp.
Lighting consultant Terry McGowan said that if a touch lamp has a mechanical switch, it will work with any CFL or LED bulb. However, if the lamp has an electronic switch, you'll need to use a CFL or LED bulb that's specially marked as dimmable. Even then you may have some problems, he said.
For 20 AMP you have 20A*120V or 2400 watts and 15 AMP you have 15A*120V or 1800 watts. Good Electricians will only plan for 80% load so you have 1920 and 1440 watts respectively at your disposal per circuit. Next, find out what's on the circuit. To do this, leave the lights on that you want to connect to.
Either way, complete these five steps for 3 way light switch wiring:
- Turn off the correct circuit at your electrical panel.
- Add an electrical box for the second three-way switch in the basement.
- Feed a length of 14-3 type NM cable (or 12-3, if you're connecting to 12-gauge wire) between the two boxes.
The last screw is the common terminal and is a darker color, usually dark brass, copper or black. This connects to the incoming source (hot) wire on one switch and to the black (hot) wire leading toMORE.
The protective ground must be bare, green or green-yellow striped. Hot (active) wires may be any other colors except these. However, common practice (per local electrical inspectors) is for the first hot (live or active) wire to be black and the second hot to be red.
The N & L stand for Neutral and Load. With your AC line in you should have three wires. Neutral, Load, and Ground. If your wires are color coded for the US then the black wire is Load or Hot, the white wire is Neutral, and the green wire is Ground.
White. The "common" is the "neutral" or "ground" wire, depending on the type of circuit. In normal US residential wiring, you'll have a black "hot" wire, a white "neutral" or "common" wire, and a green or bare "ground" wire.
In some part of the world certain people often refer to some type of (blunts, joints) as Ls. Some individuals claim L's is when a joint is rolled up with two papers and are connected to have an 'L' shape.
