How do you figure concrete yards?
Convert the dimension in inches to feet (6” ÷ 12” = 0.5') Multiply the three dimensions together to find the number of cubic feet (0.5' x 12' x 12 = 72 cubic feet) Divide the cubic feet by the number of cubic feet in a cubic yard (27) to find the number of cubic yards (72 ÷ 27 = 2.67 cu. yd.).
Calculate the volume you need in cubic yards. Multiply the length (10 ft.) by the width (10 ft.) by the depth (.35 ft., or 4 in.) and divide it by 27 (the number of cubic feet in a cubic yard). You get 1.3 cu.
The compressive strength is measured by breaking cylin- drical concrete specimens in a compression-testing machine. Con- crete compressive strength requirements can vary from 2500 psi (17 MPa) for residential concrete to 4000 psi (28 MPa) and higher in commercial structures.
Simply defined, slump is a measure of the consistency of fresh concrete. The slump test is a very simple test. The slump cone is a right circular cone that is 12 inches high. The base of the cone is 8 inches in diameter and the top of the cone is 4 inches in diameter.
A 80 lb. bag provides 0.6 cubic feet of cured concrete. If you have concrete delivered it is sold by the yard (which is a cubic yard = 27 cubic feet).
Part 2 Making Concrete from Limestone Cement
- Mix two parts all-purpose sand to one part of cement.
- Add four parts of gravel or crushed brick to the mixture.
- Slowly add water to the dry ingredients.

While ready-mix reduces work, it also boosts the cost. Each cubic yard costs about $65. However, a fully loaded cement truck will hold 10 cubic yards—and partial “short” loads cost $15 to $20 extra for every cubic yard less than a full load.
Standard concrete floor slab thickness in residential construction is 4 inches. Five to six inches is recommended if the concrete will receive occasional heavy loads, such as motor homes or garbage trucks. To prepare the base, cut the ground level to the proper depth to allow for the slab thickness.
Whats the Difference Between Cement and Concrete? Although the terms cement and concrete often are used interchangeably, cement is actually an ingredient of concrete. Concrete is basically a mixture of aggregates and paste. The aggregates are sand and gravel or crushed stone; the paste is water and portland cement.
Quikrete's Concrete Mix yield's about .15 cubic feet for every 20 pounds of mix, so a 40-pound bag yields .30 cubic feet, 60 pounds of concrete mix yields .45 cubic feet and an 80-pound bag yields .60 cubic feet. One 50-pound bag of Quikrete Fast Setting Concrete Mix yields about .375 cubic feet.
According to the table above, one cubic yard of concrete placed at a thickness of 5-inches covers 65 square feet. In a perfect universe, our 1,080 square foot driveway will need exactly 16.62 cubic yards of concrete (1,080 square feet / 65 square feet equals 16.62 cubic yards).
Part 3 Finishing, Stage Two
- Smooth and compact the surface once again with a hand float. This is the final smoothing, bringing the more consistent "cream" of the concrete to the surface for a level, durable finish.
- Consider a trowel finish.
- Try a broom finish.
- Cure the concrete.
- Seal the concrete.

Joints should be 1/4 the thickness of the slab and placed 2 or 3 times the thickness of the slab. For example, a 4 inch (10 cm) deep slab would use joints that are 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep. Those joints should be spaced every 8 to 12 feet (2.4 to 3.6 m). Working with concrete can be very dangerous.
Grade the fill material or existing soil so that your slab of concrete will be the correct depth, or thickness. Usually driveways are at least four inches thick; for heavier vehicles or difficult to stabilize soil conditions, thicker concrete is suggested.
