How do you calculate natural increase?
Rate of change. Births and deaths are natural causes of population change. The difference between the birth rate and the death rate of a country or place is called the natural increase. The natural increase is calculated by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate.
The formula for the rate of natural increase is: (Crude birth rate − Crude death rate) / 10, where birth and death rates are in per thousand. The result is the rate of natural increase in percentage form.
- Industrial Stage. The third stage of the demographic transition is the industrial stage, which is characterized by an increasing population with declining birth rates and low death rates.
- Definition: The difference between the number of live births and the number of deaths during the year. The natural increase (or natural decrease) is negative when the number of deaths exceeds the number of births.
- Formula for finding the Natural Increase Rate (NIR) Find the Crude Birth Rate (CBR) for each country in your region and add them… Find the Crude Death Rate (CDR) for each country in your region and add them… A country has a CBR of 21/1,000 and a CDR of 10/1,000.

- The current crude birth rate of Brazil is 14.97 per 1000. The current crude death rate of Brazil is 6 per 1000. The child mortality rate of Brazil is 14 per 1000. The rate of natural increase in Brazil is 0.9%.
- Canada - Rate of natural increase. In 2015, rate of natural increase for Canada was 3.62 persons per thousand population. Rate of natural increase of Canada fell gradually from 11.08 persons per thousand population in 1970 to 3.62 persons per thousand population in 2015.
- The continent which has lowest birth and death rates is Antarctica as there is no permanent settlement. Among populated continents Europe has the lowest birth and death rates. Although fertility rates are falling in many countries, Europe is the continent with the lowest total fertility rate (TFR).

- To calculate the growth rate, you simply subtract the death rate from the birth rate. In this case, the growth rate (r) of the emperor penguin population in Antarctica is 0.3 – 0.1 = 0.2 new individuals per existing individual, per year.
- Births per 1000 women, categorized according to a specific composition of mothers in the population: (1) Crude birth rate: number of live births per 1000 of population. (2) General fertility rate: number of live births per 1000 women between the ages of 15 and 44 years.
- Human population change is the difference between the size of the population from the beginning to the end of a certain time period. In other words, population change refers to change in the number of people during a specific time period. As a whole, the world population has not been stable; it has increased manifold.
