How do you apply for housing assistance?

To start receiving housing vouchers, renters need to complete and satisfy the following steps. Complete and submit an application to the local housing authority or HUD office. Renters need to apply for the Section 8 program in person.
- Public housing is limited to low-income families and individuals. An HA determines your eligibility based on: 1) annual gross income; 2) whether you qualify as elderly, a person with a disability, or as a family; and 3) U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status.
- A housing authority may—but is not required to—deny your application for a Section 8 voucher if you or a member of your household: Have been evicted from federally funded housing in the last five years. Have ever been terminated from the Section 8 voucher program.
- HUD helps apartment owners offer reduced rents to low-income tenants. To apply, contact or visit the management office of each apartment building that interests you. To apply for either type of help, visit your local Public Housing Agency (PHA).
Income Level Requirement. Section 8 is a program designed to help lower-income individuals afford housing. Therefore, to qualify for a housing choice voucher, a family's yearly income must be below a certain amount.
- The Section 42 housing program refers to that section of the Internal Revenue Tax Code which provides tax credits to investors who build affordable housing. Investors receive a reduction in their tax liability in return for providing affordable housing to people with fixed or lower income.
- Section 8 of the Housing Act of 1937 (42 U.S.C. § 1437f), often called Section 8, as repeatedly amended, authorizes the payment of rental housing assistance to private landlords on behalf of approximately 4.8 million low-income households, as of 2008, in the United States.
- Complete and submit an application to the local housing authority or HUD office. Renters need to apply for the Section 8 program in person. The application will require basic personal information as well as income information. Complete an interview with a local housing authority agent.
