How carboniferous limestone is formed?
Carboniferous Limestone is a sedimentary rock made of calcium carbonate. It is generally light-grey in colour, and is hard. It was formed in warm, shallow tropical seas teeming with life. The rock is made up of the shells and hard parts of millions of sea creatures, some up to 30 cm in length, encased in carbonate mud.
Limestone is a type of rock that is made up of bits of animal shells. Over millions of years these shells collected on the ocean floor. As layers of shells and mud built up, the lower layers slowly hardened into limestone. Dover, England, is famous for its white cliffs made of chalk, a soft form of limestone.

Pulverized limestone is used as a soil conditioner to neutralize acidic soils (agricultural lime). Is crushed for use as aggregate—the solid base for many roads as well as in asphalt concrete.
- Limestones are shades of bluish gray to tan. The brown and yellow shades are usually caused by iron oxide impurities and the dark-gray to black colors are caused by organic material. The texture of limestone ranges from coarsely crystalline to very fine grained.

- Lime, particularly quicklime, is an alkaline material that is reactive in the presence of moisture. Workers handling lime must be trained and wear proper protective equipment. Eye Hazards—Lime can cause severe eye irritation or burning, including permanent damage. Inhalation Hazards—Lime dust is irritating if inhaled.
- If Limes are allowed to fully ripen on the tree, they actually turn from green to yellow. Because of this, some people believe (erroneously) that Limes are just unripe Lemons. Whereas, truth to tell, even the Lemons that we buy are unripe Lemons. Limes have more sugar and citric acid than do lemons.
Formation of a limestone pavement. Limestone is slightly soluble in water and especially in acid rain, so corrosive drainage along joints and cracks in the limestone can produce slabs called clints isolated by deep fissures called grikes or grykes (terms derived from a northern English dialect).
- On the west side of the 80 metre (260 foot) high cliff face are about 400 irregular stone steps: these form part of the route of the Pennine Way and lead to an uneven limestone pavement at the top.
- Karst is a topography formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. It is characterized by underground drainage systems with sinkholes and caves. Subterranean drainage may limit surface water, with few to no rivers or lakes.
- Pavements are made up of two separate but integral parts known as clints and grykes. Clints are the blocks of limestone that constitute the paving, their area and shape is directly dependant upon the frequency and pattern of grykes. Grykes are the fissures that isolate the individual clints.
