Do you drain the kidney beans before adding to chili?
If you are concerned about sodium/sugar -Rinse. If the liquid turns you off - Drain/Rinse. If you are putting them in a salad or dry dish - Rinse/Drain. When using canned beans in Chili, Soup, or any dish requiring liquid - Draining/Rinsing (Optional).
Editor: Chili beans are something you'll find in the canned good aisle at your grocery store. I believe they are usually pinto beans in a mild chili-spiked sauce. If you can't find chili beans, you can likely just substitute pinto beans.
- In a large stock pot lightly brown ground beef, and drain if needed.
- Add onion and garlic and cook until onion is translucent.
- Add tomatoes, diced tomatoes with chile peppers, tomato sauce, water, kidney beans, pinto beans, chili powder, cumin, sugar, salt, pepper and hot sauce.

Pinto beans work for both red and white chili. Kidney (regular & large) and black beans for red, northern and navy for white. Don't be afraid to mix them up. A good, firm bean is essential so that it doesn't disintegrate during the cooking process.
- Chili is short for CHILI CON CARNEwhich is spanish for meat with chilis. Does it say Chili con carne con frijoles? NO. Beans do not belong in true chili.
- Full-of-Veggies Chili
- 1 large sweet onion, diced.
- 1 large green bell pepper, diced.
- 2 garlic cloves, minced.
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil.
- 1 (12-ounce) package ground beef substitute.
- 1 large zucchini, diced.
- 1 (11-ounce) can whole kernel corn, undrained.
- 2 (15-ounce) cans no-salt-added tomato sauce.
- Stir tomatoes, tomato sauce, pinto beans, kidney beans, black beans, onion, green chilies, chili powder, garlic, oregano, and cumin with the turkey in the slow cooker. Cook on High for 4 hours or on Low for 7 hours.
LIGHT RED KIDNEY beans are similar to their darker relative and are the bean for the Southern dish red beans and rice. Same cooking time as kidney beans. PINTO (pink) is the staple of Mexican cooking, and is a pinkish-mauve color that turns brownish when cooked.
- Baked beans is a dish containing beans, sometimes baked but, despite the name, usually stewed, in a sauce. Most commercially canned baked beans are made from haricot beans, also known as navy beans (a variety of Phaseolus vulgaris) in a sauce.
- Pinto Beans Nutrition. When you eat a cup of pinto beans, you're getting 15 grams of protein and 62 percent of your daily fiber. That's the same amount of protein as in black beans and slightly more fiber. Pinto beans are lower in thiamin than black beans, but they contain a little bit more folate.
- Cannellini Beans. Cannellini beans are the largest of the group and because of their traditional kidney shape, they can also be referred to as White Kidney Beans. Meatier than Navy or Great Northern beans, they have a nutty, earthy flavor and tender flesh, and are often used in Italian dishes like Minestrone.
