Do real diamonds sparkle?

ilovebutter/Flickr The way that diamonds reflect light is unique: Inside the stone, the diamond will sparkle gray and white (known as "brilliance") while outside of the gem, it will reflect rainbow colors onto other surfaces (this dispersed light is known as "fire"). "They do sparkle, but it's more of a gray color.

How to Tell if a Diamond is Real with Water
  1. Get a glass and fill it with water. It doesn't matter what type of water you use.
  2. Drop the diamond into the glass of water. Due to the high density of a diamond, when dropped into water it will sink. If the diamond floats to the top or middle of the glass, it's fake.

Do real diamonds sparkle in the dark?

Since, Diamonds get their brilliance from three things: reflection, refraction and dispersion. Reflection is the light that hits the diamond and is immediately bounced back up, giving it an instantaneous shine. Hence diamond never shine in dark or until and unless light comes on it.

How can you tell a diamond from a cubic zirconia?

If you have an unmounted stone you know to be either CZ or real diamond, place both rocks in your hand and bounce them gently, you should be able to immediately tell which is the heavier cubic zirconia and which is the lighter diamond. A low-tech alternative method uses only your breath.
