Do LED lights require a special dimmer switch?
The less electricity drawn, the dimmer the light. If you'd like your LED to be dimmable, you need to do one of two things: find LED bulbs compatible with traditional dimmers, or replace your current dimming switch with a leading-edge (LED-compatible) dimmer.
Step 2: Find out if you have an LED compatible dimmer. You see, the 2 most common household dimmers include: Leading edge dimmers- these dimmers were designed to work with incandescent bulbs and most likely won't work well with LED light bulbs. They're the “traditional” and most common dimmer found in homes.
- First and foremost, LEDs are not dimmed based on an increase or decrease of voltage (as is the case with their incandescent counterparts.) Instead, what the LED does is it creates a “dimming effect.” There are two ways to do this: pulse-width-modulation (PWM LED) and analog dimming (sans cool-sounding acronym.)
- There shouldn't be any dangers if you use a dimmer that's designed for LED lights. Basically, most modern dimmers rapidly modulate between on/off and is safe for long term use in a low state. A side effect however, is that it may generate RF interference or even an audible humming sound.
- That's because current dimmer controls are designed to work with incandescent bulbs, and the technology they use isn't always compatible with CFLs or LEDs. But Gordon says most LED bulb manufacturers haven't begun to inform consumers about whether or not their light fixtures are compatible with exisiting dimmers.
The number one rule for successfully dimming LED lighting might sound obvious but it is a common misconception that any LED lights can be dimmed with an LED dimmer. Choose 'dimmable' lamps but be aware that this in itself is not a guarantee of a good dimming performance. It is, however, a good starting point.
- An LED driver is an electrical device which regulates the power to an LED or a string (or strings) of LEDs. An LED driver responds to the changing needs of the LED, or LED circuit, by providing a constant quantity of power to the LED as its electrical properties change with temperature.
- How Dimmer Switches Work. Instead of diverting energy from the light bulb into a resistor, modern resistors rapidly shut the light circuit off and on to reduce the total amount of energy flowing through the circuit. The light bulb circuit is switched off many times every second.
