- Here is a breakdown of the ingredients Keurig uses to make their descaling solution. That means that more than half the solution is made up of citric acid. Silicic acid is “a weakly acidic colloidal hydrated form of silica made by acidifying solutions of alkali metal silicates.” This is a stabilizing agent.
The water heats up to the perfect temperature as it flows up past the heating element. The water is pumped through a narrow needle to increase its pressure. The hot, high-pressure water pumps through the ground coffee in the pod, releasing the flavor.
- The Coffee Making Process. But here's where the magic comes into play with coffee makers: After pouring water into the reservoir, it flows through the hole and into the aluminum tube in the heating element. Once you've hit the switch, the heating element heats the aluminum tube, eventually boiling the water.
- Nespresso recommends that you descale your machine approximately every three months. But if you use your machine often and want to ensure that it is always producing the best flavor, it is recommended that you descale it after every 300 capsules.
- Though Keurig recently confirmed that its pods are BPA free, they did test positive for estrogenic activity and may also contain polystyrene, a possible carcinogen. Aluminum: The top of these k-cup coffee pods is usually made of aluminum, which has some health concerns of its own and which may be bad for the brain.
