Can you see DNA without a microscope?

Many people assume that because DNA is so small, we can't see it without powerful microscopes. But in fact, DNA can be easily seen with the naked eye when collected from thousands of cells.

Similarly, you may ask, what does it mean for a strawberry to be Octoploid?

Some fruits are especially suited for DNA extractions due to their multiple sets of chromosomes. Strawberries are octoploid, which means they have 8 copies of each chromosome (human body cells are diploid; they contain two copies of each chromosomes).

Why do we get a lot of DNA from strawberries?

Ripe strawberries are an excellent source for extracting DNA because they are easy to pulverize and contain enzymes called pectinases and cellulases that help to break down cell walls. And most important, strawberries have eight copies of each chromosome (they are octoploid), so there is a lot of DNA to isolate.

Do bananas or strawberries have more DNA?

Strawberries are soft and easy to pulverize. Strawberries have large genomes; they are octoploid, which means they have eight of each type of chromosome in each cell. Thus, strawberries are an exceptional fruit to use in DNA extraction labs and strawberries yield more DNA than any other fruit (i.e. banana, kiwi, etc.).
