Can roaches come up through the toilet?
Some species of cockroaches can swim, but not in a fashion you might expect. While it's not common for roaches to ?swim” up through floor and toilet drains to enter structures, it does happen. Roaches simply close their spiracles so that no water can enter their bodies, and then travel up the drain.
Run warm water through sink pipes for at least 3 minutes, then pour 3-4 cups of boiling water down the drain. Use a mixture of baking soda and distilled vinegar to clean pipes: pour ½ cup of baking soda down the pipe, followed by ½ cup of distilled white vinegar.
- They generally prefer to live outdoors but can invade into basements or other damp, dark areas. They may be found in bathtubs and in kitchen sinks, and even can crawl in through sewer drain pipes. Control of these cockroaches is best with the use of several techniques.
- Moth flies are not dangerous to humans or cause structural damage, but they become a nuisance in large quantities. Even though these pests eat sewage, they are not known to transmit any harmful bacteria. There have been some instances where asthma as been triggered by people who inhaled drain fly body parts.
- Drain flies do not bite humans but may become a nuisance by their presence in large populations. Sometimes it takes persistent effort to eradicate an infestation in the home. Concentrate on eliminating larval breeding sites from drains in floors, sinks, wash basins, bathtubs, etc.
